PATCHES
To my friends at the SPCA,
I wanted to write a letter to you to keep you up-to-date with my life since we last saw each other. You might remember me better as "Checkers" in my time with you, but my new owners call me "Patches".
I have really settled in to my new home. My owners spoil me with love and attention. I am working hard to train them to read my thoughts and actions so we can continue to get along so well.
Unbeknownst to me, I had the misfortune of contracting an illness before we met. My new veterinarian told me that I had something known as Heartworm and that I was a sick puppy. My new owners were given the choice of putting me to sleep or treating me. Fortunately for me, I am so adorable that it was hardly a decision at all to have me treated. My owners tell me that you guys sent love and support as I endured a rough couple of weeks during treatment. I am happy to report to you now that my last blood results show no live adult worms or eggs, only some residual proteins from the worms that have already broken up. I am scheduled to have one more set of blood tests to confirm that everything is back to normal. We are all optimistic that I have put this behind me and will have no lasting effects.
I am particularly excited to share with you that I have been attending school. I just completed seven weeks of Level One Obedience Training at Pet-D-Gree in Paris. I have enclosed a copy of my report card as I am very proud to be a straight A student. Of course my owners think that the schooling was to train me. I won't burst their bubble by telling them that I could do these things all along, they just had to learn how to communicate with me to tell me what they want. Some of my new behaviors include sitting in the Living Room while they eat in the Dining Room, waiting patiently at the door until my owners pass through, and I can even Sit-Stay and Down-Stay on command for two minutes!!!! Of course they have also taught me a few tricks, like shaking a paw and high-fiving. It seems to make my owners very happy when I do these. But I think the real proof of how much I have learned is that I am sitting at this computer typing you a letter!
Probably the most important reason for me to be writing you today is to say thanks. I tried to show my appreciation to you while you cared for me. I would sit at your feet and lick you to let you know how lucky I felt that you came into my life. I also wanted to thank you for finding me a new home. My new owners make no secret of how much they love me and care about my health and comfort. Life here is much better than on the streets where you found me. Without you, and the work that you do, I would not have been able to find myself in this loving environment. I want you to know how much I appreciate all of the things that you did for me. Without your involvement in my life, I may not have been here today to write you this note. I owe you my very existence.
I should probably run along now before my owner sees me typing this. After I first high-fived him he had me doing it for weeks. If he learns that I can type he will probably have me doing his banking and typing love-letters to his wife in no time. I'll just run downstairs and play with a tennis ball and this whole correspondence can be our little secret.
With all my love, Patches (a.k.a. Checkers) |

Hi there all and a special hello to Ann. We were lucky to be the people who adopted Keno. He is Awesome. He eats what we give him, he listens except when it's bedtime. He would rather not go in the crate. I'm sure he won't go in the crate much longer as he is very well house broken. He is a very affectionate young man who needs assurance
that he is loved every so often. Keno seldom barks and have only heard him howl a couple of times. He is very good with our grandchildren when they come over. He loves to go in the car and goes almost everywhere we go. He drives me to and from work every day. He even went shopping across the border. The lady guard was so taken by him she let us over with 200.00 worth of goods. He likes our cat Callie, but Callie moved downstairs. She was the cock of the walk for too long, I guess. She hits him with her clawless paw and he looks like he's saying "What'd I do?" Oh well they will work it out. Keno goes out in our yard and plays in the snow for a very long time. He won't come in til he's ready. He drags things like shovels and brooms out of the garage and leaves them in the yard. He does not like to be brushed. He runs away when he sees the brush. I brush him
a bit and he gets a
All in all we are very happy with him. He has a wonderful personality and such a beautiful face. He really fits in well with our family and lifestyle. Thank you so much for choosing us. You will find a picture of keno doing what he likes 2nd to riding in the car. He likes to relax on our leather couch. Thanks again Larry & Carol Scholes and Keno |

| PRISILLA (MISS PRISSY) A.K.A. CLARISSA
Hi, just wanted to pass along another success story. I visited your branch with my daughter recently to pick up her adopted Clarissa. I was the emergency number she had given and I have to confess that I
fell in love with Clarissa (I now call her Miss Prissy) and so I
took her home with me.
I am a widow and a real cat lover and I can't tell you how she has filled such a void in my life. She is a wonderful companion and I just love her to death. The SPCA is one of my favorite charities to which I donate all the time. I have to thank you for all the wonderful work you do for all those that can't speak for themselves.
Thank you, J. Harriss. |

| HELLO, MY NAME IS CHICA (FORMERLY CHARO)
picture on the SPCA website and started calling for me right away. On March 5, 2004 they came in to see me, they went in to where the dogs were and I was hiding under my blanket. They let us go into the play room, mommy thought my tail was going to fall off I was wagging it so fast. It only took a couple of seconds before I knew I wanted to go home with them. As soon as I got home I knew this was the place for me, there were toys everywhere all for me.
I did not get such a warm welcome from my sister Tailor (she's the frisky orange cat) she kept making this weird hissing noise whenever I walked by, must have been a hairball or something because she does not do that anymore. My other sister Brooke (the big black cat) seems happy that I'm here.
I was not feeling well when I came home but mommy took me to the vet and got me some really yummy food, I feel much better now. At first I hated it when mommy left for work I would sit by the door and howl, but now I have learned a cool new trick if you leave mommy a dog bone or a pigs ear by the door for when she comes home, she gets home as fast as she can. I still like to go under blankets
and sleep, my favorite one is the pink fuzzy one, I think it
was mommy's housecoat or something, oh well.
Mommy & daddy take me for lots of little walks, I have 3 new sweaters to show off to all of the other dogs. Although I don't like the snow, rain, cold, wind or when other dogs are barking at me it's still nice to get outside. Whenever we go outside everybody stops to say hi, and tells me how cute I am.
In one month we are moving to our first house and I will have my very own backyard to play in, the only bad thing is that I don't do stairs, mommy has to carry me up & down ( I know she likes to, she just won't admit to it yet).
had a rough start, each day that goes by I let loose a bit more, the more I let loose the more I can't remember how bad my life use to be, in no time all I will know is love and remember only how much fun, love and opportunities my mommy & daddy have given me. Okay my mommy is kicking me off now, she wants to talk, so thanks and talk to you soon.
I just wanted to take a moment to Thank everyone at the Brantford SPCA for letting Chica come in to our lives. She is amazingly friendly, kind, affectionate and loves to give kisses. I know she had a rough start, but you wouldn't even know it from her wonderful personality. Thank you for giving Chica, Scott & myself a new start.
Thank you for everything Chica, mommy (Jenn Skitch) & daddy (Scott DeJong) |

| Hi to the staff of the Brantford S.P.C.A.
Daly wanted to let you know that he is happily adjusting to his new life with the Adams family. We have changed his name to "Maugy". He seems to like the new name and already comes running when we call. At this point he has secured his position in the window where he can watch the multitude of birds in the backyard.
He has mastered the request to go out into the screened porch and spends many happy hours breathing the spring air and guarding the property from flies and ladybugs.
Maugy seems to relate best to Phil and when Phil leaves the house for outside he talks to me quite a bit. I've assured him that Phil will return and so he happily returns to his guard position in the window.
We don't plan to allow him outside for several weeks yet and if he isn't eager to venture beyond the porch that is just fine with us.
Night time is spent at the bottom of our bed and he has already adjusted to our sleeping habits.
Thank you for taking such excellent care of this handsome gentleman. He is a welcome addition to our new home in Port Dover.
Sincerely, Lynda. |

| A Wonderful & Unusual Success Story
Cherokee arrived at our shelter in October of 2003. We knew right away that he was special and would steal everyone's hearts, but for some reason no one was interested in adopting Cherokee and his health and spirit started to deteriorate. He became very thin, had wounds on his head and feet from jumping up and down in his kennel and his tail was always raw from hitting the side of his cage. People would file by, looking for the "perfect" dog, comment on the state of his health and pass him by. Our attempts to explain his amazing personality and reason for his appearance were to no avail. There he sat, day after day until we met Liz & her young Staff X "Louie". When Liz heard about Cherokee she went to visit him at the shelter and immediately contacted a network of Staff X owners for help. That's when Cherokee and Christelle came into each other's lives. Christelle lives in Las Vegas and saw Cherokee on the website and it was love at first site!!! Christelle made arrangements through Liz and the shelter to adopt Cherokee and have him sent to Las Vegas. He stayed at a boarding kennel for one night, at a foster home for a week, then went by animal transport truck to Las Vegas.
There were numerous problems and obstacles to overcome along the way, but the pictures and comments from Christelle below tell the story of Cherokee's happy ending. A big hug to Liz, and especially Christelle and her family for providing Cherokee with the loving home life he has always deserved. We miss you Cherokee.
The following are some excerpts from the many wonderful emails we've received from Christelle in the past month:
"Cherokee is doing wonderfully. We've had no problems what so ever. As soon as he arrived he was home! He is a great bundle of joy, really calm and a lot of fun. I couldn't ask for better."
"It was meant to be for him to come all the way down here. I remember when I first saw his picture. His eyes looked so sad and it completely broke my heart. I promised myself right then to do everything in my power to help him."
"He will live a long happy life with my family. I love him dearly. He is my baby and gives back to us 100%!!!!" "I still can't believe he spent so much time at the shelter and still came out with such an exceptional temperament. That is a true miracle. All he wanted was a family, someone to love and a nice comfy bed." "His tail has almost healed and he has already gained some weight."
"Thank you so much for allowing us to adopt him.... Christelle, Fletcher & Brianna". |
